This is the most direct comparison on the site. LicenseSpring does the same job we do — licence keys, activations, entitlements, an API your software calls — and does it well. The difference is hosted versus self-hosted, and the price gap that follows from it is large enough to be the whole decision for a small vendor.

LicenseSpring's Business Starter costs in one month what LicensorPro Solo costs in a year. That is not a slight against them — running a hosted API with an uptime commitment genuinely costs money, and someone has to pay for it. But if you are a solo developer selling plugins, $2,388 a year for licence validation is a serious line item.
The gap holds all the way down the table. Their Business Starter covers three products for $199 a month; our Solo covers five for $199 a year. At the top, Business Plus is ten products for $9,000 a year against Studio's fifteen for $399.
Watch the request limits, not the price
The number that will actually bite is monthly requests. Business Starter allows 10,000. A WordPress plugin that phones home once a day per site burns that with about 330 active installs. A plugin checking twice a day hits it at 165.
So the price you are comparing is not $199 a month. It is $199 a month until you are moderately successful, and then it is $750. On your own server, a licence check is a database query and there is no meter.
What each one actually costs you, all in
The two numbers above are the licensing line and nothing else. Both products stop at the same place: neither LicenseSpring nor LicensorPro is your merchant of record. LicenseSpring is a licensing API, not a store — it issues keys, checks them and counts the checks. We ship checkout, but the money still lands through a payment provider you choose.
That matters for the comparison, and it cuts in an unusual direction. Whatever you spend on taking payments and handling tax, you spend on both sides of this table. It is the same provider, the same percentage, the same invoice. So unlike our Freemius comparison, where the percentage is the product and changes the whole answer, here it cancels out and the licensing gap survives intact.

The honest version of the last row. $2,388 against $199 is a real gap, but you are not buying the same thing. Part of their price is somebody else being responsible at 3am. Self-hosting moves that to you: backups, upgrades, and an endpoint that has to answer when your customers' software calls it. If a licence server going down for an afternoon would be a crisis you cannot personally handle, the hosted option is doing something for the money and you should pay it.

Moving off LicenseSpring
Changing a store is inconvenient. Changing a licensing server can break working installs of paying customers, which is a different order of problem, and it is the single reason to not do this casually. The keys your customers already hold have to keep working, unchanged, on a server they have never heard of.
LicensorPro imports existing keys with their original key strings, expiry dates and activation counts, so nobody has to re-enter anything. The part that takes time is not the import. It is that installs update on their own schedule, so the old endpoint has to keep answering until the long tail catches up, and your client needs to fail open if it cannot reach either server. A migration that locks out paying customers over a network blip is worse than the fee you were trying to escape.

Which one should you actually pick
LicenseSpring is the better fit if…
- You ship native desktop software and need hardware node-locking done properly.
- You need SDKs we don't have: C++, Go, Unity, Swift or Android. (We cover WordPress, PHP, Python, Java, .NET and JavaScript.)
- You do not want to run any infrastructure, and the cost is comfortably inside your budget.
- You need an uptime SLA you can point a customer at.
LicensorPro is the better fit if…
- You sell WordPress plugins, where our update handling is the point rather than an add-on.
- You already run a server and adding one more PHP application is not a burden.
- A per-request meter is the wrong shape for a product with thousands of quiet installs.
- You want the licence data to stay on infrastructure you control.
