Alternatives
Worth saying before anything else, because it flips the whole comparison: EDD takes 0% of your sales on the passes that include licensing. (Below the Extended pass, EDD's Stripe docs add a 3% fee, as of 17 September 2026.) Nobody is leaving it to escape a revenue share. They leave over the pass price, or the number of moving parts, or because they would rather somebody else handled tax. Those are three different problems with three different answers.
| Why you are looking | What you should be shopping for | What would be a mistake |
|---|---|---|
| The pass costs too much | A cheaper flat-fee tool that covers the extensions you actually use | Moving to a percentage platform. You would go from paying 0% to paying 5–10%. |
| Too many moving parts | A hosted platform that does store, tax and licensing in one place | Another self-hosted stack. You will rebuild the same sprawl. |
| You want tax handled | A merchant of record — and yes, that means paying a percentage | Any self-hosted option, including ours. None of them file your VAT. |
Easy Digital Downloads' core plugin is free and on WordPress.org. The money is in the extension passes. So "leaving EDD" usually means leaving the pass, not the plugin.
That matters because the expensive part for most plugin sellers is one specific extension. Software Licensing is not in the entry tiers — it requires the Professional Pass, $599 a year at list price. If licensing is the only reason you are on that tier, you have a cheaper option that is not on any listicle: stay on free EDD core for the store, and run licensing separately. You keep the checkout, the customers and the reports you already know.
Check this before you shop. Open your EDD account and look at which extensions you actually have active, not which pass you bought. We have seen people on the $599 pass using two extensions, one of which ships free. That is a renewal decision, not a migration.
| Option | Cost | Self-hosted? | Handles your tax? |
|---|---|---|---|
| SureCart | $0 + 2.9%, or $199/yr flat | Hybrid — WP plugin, hosted backend | No |
| LicensorPro | $199–$799/yr · Solo $99.50 with FOUNDERS50 | Yes | No |
| WooCommerce + licensing extension | Free core, extensions vary | Yes | No |
| Freemius | 7% for WordPress products | No | Yes |
| Lemon Squeezy | 5% + 50¢ | No | Yes |
| Paddle | 5% + 50¢ | No | Yes |
The most direct replacement if you want to stay in WordPress with a modern checkout. $0 plus a 2.9% transaction fee on the free tier, or $199 a year flat with no transaction fee, with a $699 lifetime option. Against EDD's $599 Professional Pass that is a real saving if licensing was why you were on that tier.
The trade: the backend is hosted, so this is less self-hosted than EDD. If your reason for using EDD was owning the whole stack, that is a step away from it, and the free tier's 2.9% is a percentage where EDD charged none.
Flat: Solo $199/year, Studio $399/year, Agency $799/year, 0% of sales, running on your own server. It replaces the licensing and update half of what the Professional Pass gave you, and you keep EDD core, WooCommerce or anything else for the checkout.
Only pick this if cost or ownership is your reason. If you came here because you have too many moving parts, adding a separate licensing server is the wrong direction — you would end up with more of them, not fewer. Say so plainly rather than sell you the wrong thing.
Reasonable if WooCommerce is already running on the site for other products. If it is not, this is a much heavier store than EDD for the same job — EDD exists precisely because Woo is built for physical commerce first.
Worth taking seriously despite the cost, because it solves the reason a lot of people actually leave. Freemius is 4.7% plus a 2.3% WordPress surcharge, so about 7%, and in exchange it is the store, the merchant of record and the licensing server, with install analytics on top. You stop maintaining any of it.
Going from EDD's 0% to 7% is a real cost. But if the actual problem is that you are a developer spending weekends on billing infrastructure, that is the trade that fixes it. Our full breakdown of their pricing, including the progressive tiers for larger sellers, is on the Freemius alternatives page.
Both 5% + 50¢, both merchants of record. Pick these over Freemius if you want tax handled but do not need the WordPress-specific tooling, and note that neither gives you licensing and update delivery the way Freemius or EDD's Software Licensing does — you would pair one with a licensing server. Paddle puts products under $10 on custom pricing, so check that first.
LicensorPro is one of the alternatives above, and the one we make, so here is the full side-by-side. Easy Digital Downloads's column comes from its own public pages, read 17 September 2026; we didn't sign up to test it. Ours is checked against the LicensorPro 2.5.1 build customers download. The longer write-up is on the Easy Digital Downloads comparison page.

Easier than leaving a platform whose SDK is inside your plugin, and harder than the listicles suggest.
These five pages cover the same ground for the other platforms plugin authors actually leave. The honest answer differs by vendor, so they do not all reach the same conclusion.
Not on the passes that include licensing. On Extended and above EDD takes 0% of what you sell and you pay only your gateway; its Stripe docs say a 3% fee applies to Stripe payments on the free plugin and the Personal pass, and returns if the licence lapses (checked 17 September 2026). That is why moving to a platform like Freemius, Lemon Squeezy or Paddle is a cost increase, not a saving, and why the usual "escape the fees" framing does not apply to EDD at all.
The Software Licensing extension requires the Professional Pass, which lists at $599 a year. It is frequently discounted, but budget the list price because a renewal at a promotional rate is not guaranteed. Checked September 2026.
The core plugin is free and available on WordPress.org. The cost is in the extension passes. So for most sellers "leaving EDD" really means leaving the pass, and one option no comparison list mentions is keeping free EDD core for the store while running licensing separately.
It depends whether you still want a full store. SureCart is $199 a year flat with no transaction fee, or free with a 2.9% fee. A licensing-only server such as LicensorPro is $199 a year and keeps your existing checkout. Both are below the $599 Professional Pass if licensing was the reason you were on that tier.
Only if your problem is effort rather than money. Freemius is about 7% for WordPress products against EDD's 0%, so it costs meaningfully more. What you get back is the store, the merchant-of-record tax handling and the licensing server all maintained by somebody else.
The order history is easy because it is already in your own database. The hard parts are existing licence keys, which are embedded in live customer sites, and update delivery, since installs keep asking the old endpoint until they update. Ship a release pointing at the new endpoint before switching anything off, and keep both alive for a renewal cycle.
