Gumroad charges 10% + 50¢ on your own sales and 30% when a buyer finds you through Discover. That is the highest headline rate of any platform we compare. But the fee is the second question. The first is what you sell — because Gumroad delivers files with basic licence keys on top, and if what you sell is software that needs managed activations and updates, no amount of fee comparison is the point.
| You sell files | You sell software | |
|---|---|---|
| Examples | Ebooks, templates, presets, courses, design assets, sample packs | WordPress plugins and themes, desktop apps, scripts, SaaS licences |
| What you need | A storefront and a checkout. Delivery is a download link. | A storefront and licence keys, activation limits, and updates that reach the customer's install. |
| Is Gumroad the wrong tool? | No — it does exactly this job. Your question is purely the fee. | Partly. It sells the file. It is not an update server for wp-admin. |

Gumroad works. You are here because 10% is a lot. Every option below does the same job for less, and the trade is almost always discoverability or setup time.
| Option | Fee | Merchant of record? | The trade |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lemon Squeezy | 5% + 50¢ | Yes | Half the fee, same hands-off tax handling. Closest like-for-like. |
| Paddle | 5% + 50¢ | Yes | Aimed further up-market. Products under $10 are on custom pricing. |
| Payhip | Free tier with a fee; paid tiers reduce it | Handles EU VAT | Built for exactly this audience. Check the current tier table. |
| SureCart | $0 + 2.9%, or $199/yr flat | No | Cheapest at volume, but you own the tax problem and you need a WordPress site. |
| WooCommerce | Free core + gateway fees | No | Lowest possible cost, most work. You are running a store. |
On a $30,000 year, Gumroad's 10% is about $3,000 before the per-order 50¢. Lemon Squeezy or Paddle at 5% is about $1,500. SureCart's flat $199 is about $199. That spread is the entire argument, and it gets wider every year you keep selling.
Gumroad hands the buyer a file. For a WordPress plugin, a desktop app or a script, that leaves two jobs undone that matter more than the percentage:
| Option | Cost | Licence keys + updates | Handles tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freemius | ~7% for WordPress products | Yes, built for it | Yes |
| LicensorPro | $199–$799/yr flat · Solo $99.50 with FOUNDERS50 | Yes | No — you stay the seller |
| EDD + Software Licensing | $599/yr list (Professional Pass) | Yes | No |
| Lemon Squeezy | 5% + 50¢ | Yes: licence keys with activation limits, and WordPress updates through their plugin | Yes |
If you want one thing that does everything, Freemius is the honest recommendation even though we compete with it — store, tax and licensing in one place, at roughly 7%, which is still less than Gumroad's 10%. If you would rather pay a flat fee and keep the money, that is what we built LicensorPro for: $199 a year, 0% of sales, running on your own server, with your existing checkout in front of it.
LicensorPro is one of the alternatives above, and the one we make, so here is the full side-by-side. Gumroad's column comes from its own public pages, read 17 September 2026; we didn't sign up to test it. Ours is checked against the LicensorPro 2.5.1 build customers download. The longer write-up is on the Gumroad comparison page.

The easiest migration of any platform we compare, with one thing worth planning.
These five pages cover the same ground for the other platforms plugin authors actually leave. The honest answer differs by vendor, so they do not all reach the same conclusion.
10% plus 50 cents per transaction on sales through your own profile or direct links, and 30% per transaction when a new customer finds you through Gumroad Discover. There are no monthly charges. Checked 16 September 2026.
For files, a flat-fee store such as SureCart at $199 a year, or WooCommerce where you pay only gateway fees. For a like-for-like hosted platform that still handles your tax, Lemon Squeezy and Paddle are both 5% + 50 cents, half of Gumroad's direct rate.
You can sell the zip file, and Gumroad can issue a licence key per sale with an API to verify and disable it. It is not an update server, though, so nothing reaches a customer's wp-admin update screen, and per-site activations and expiry are left to your own code. For plugins that usually means pairing Gumroad with a licensing server or using a platform built for software. Checked 16 September 2026.
It depends entirely on whether those buyers would have found you otherwise. 30% of a sale that only happened because Gumroad put you in front of someone is a commission, not a fee. 30% of a customer who already knew your name is expensive. Look at your own split between Discover and direct before deciding.
If you sell WordPress plugins, quite possibly. Freemius is about 7% for WordPress products against Gumroad's 10%, so it is cheaper, and it adds managed activations and update delivery, where Gumroad stops at basic licence keys. If you sell ebooks or templates it would be the wrong tool entirely.
Export the customer list while your account is still active, because that is the asset worth keeping. Existing download links keep working until you remove the products, so you can run both for a while. Subscriptions are the exception: recurring customers have to re-subscribe on the new platform and some will not.
