The Best Link Whisper Alternative for WordPress (2026)
Comparison
Link Whisper popularised the idea that internal linking should happen while you write, and it earned its reputation honestly. People look for an alternative for three reasons: they want a genuinely useful free tier before committing, they would rather not pay a subscription forever, or they want to know what the “AI” is actually doing. This page is about whether JnK Linkweave answers those three things — and where Link Whisper is still the better buy.
How we checked this. We installed Link Whisper Free 0.9.7 on our own test site. Prices, tiers and AI credit allowances come from linkwhisper.com and its wordpress.org listing, read 18 September 2026. We did not buy Premium, so Premium-only screens are marked as not tested hands-on rather than guessed at. JnK Linkweave is ours, and its rows are checked against the released 1.7.0 builds.
Link Whisper is $97 a year, and every tier has a credit allowance
Their pricing changed in 2026 and a lot of comparison articles — including at least one competitor’s — still quote the old figures. Here is what it costs today.

The credit line is the part worth reading twice. Every tier includes a fixed AI credit allowance, and the pricing page links to separate AI Credit Plans for topping up — while the same page’s comparison table against LinkBoss describes Link Whisper’s AI link suggestions as “unlimited, built-in”. Both statements sit on the same page. The likeliest reading is that the ordinary suggestions are unmetered and the AI-specific ones draw on credits, but we are not going to assert that on their behalf. Go and read the tier you are considering before you buy, and work out what 2,000 credits means for the size of your site.
A free tier that is not a demo
Most internal-linking plugins meet you through a stripped-down free version whose job is to make you upgrade. The JnK Linkweave free build is not shaped that way. It has no site limit, and it includes the editor sidebar with ranked suggestions, unlimited auto-linking rules, inbound link counts, background indexing, and read-only orphan-page and broken-link reports.
What it withholds is the destructive and bulk tooling — repairing broken links in bulk, changing URLs site-wide, exporting reports. That is a deliberate line: you can see every problem on your site for free, and you pay only to fix them at scale. Seeing how bad your orphan situation is should not cost $97.
You can see why a suggestion appeared
Linkweave ranks suggestions with BM25 and TF‑IDF similarity scoring — a well-understood information-retrieval technique that measures how topically related two documents are by the meaningful terms they share. It is implemented in plain PHP and it runs inside your own WordPress install.
Two things follow from that, and only one of them is about privacy. The first is that a suggestion is explainable: the sidebar shows the matched terms, so when a client asks why you linked those two posts you have an answer. The second is that there is no meter, because there is no remote service doing work that someone has to pay for. You can accept ten suggestions this month or ten thousand and the price is the same.
We should be precise rather than absolute here, because absolute privacy claims are usually false. There is exactly one way content leaves your server: Pro includes an optional bring-your-own-key LLM re-ranking mode. Switch it on, paste in your own OpenAI or Anthropic key, and candidate passages go to that provider while you pay them directly at their token rates. It is off by default, nothing depends on it, and the BM25 engine is what runs when it is off — including in the free build.

Pricing: flat, with a lifetime option
Link Whisper is a subscription across all four tiers, priced per year. Stop renewing and you lose updates and support. Linkweave keeps a free core and prices Pro flat: $29/year for 3 sites (Solo), $49 for 10 sites (Studio) and $99 for unlimited sites (Agency). Every tier also has a lifetime licence at roughly three times the yearly price, starting at $89 one-time. There are no per-suggestion or per-request fees at any tier. Full detail on the pricing page.
If three years of a tool feels like a reasonable planning horizon, the lifetime option is the cheaper answer and it removes the renewal decision entirely. That is the main structural difference in how the two products are sold.
Switching, or running both while you decide
- Install the free build — a direct download from us. You can run it alongside Link Whisper while you evaluate; that is exactly what we did for this comparison.
- Let it index your content, then open a post and check the editor sidebar for ranked suggestions with their matched terms.
- Set a few auto-linking rules for your priority keywords and target URLs. There is no limit on these in the free build.
- Review the orphan report and add internal links to the posts that have none. This is where most of the immediate value is on an older site.
- Upgrade to Pro only if you need bulk URL changes, broken-link repair, CSV export, click analytics or LLM re-ranking.
Stay with Link Whisper if
Live Search Console integration matters to your workflow and a CSV export is not an acceptable substitute. Or you want AI suggestions with no key to manage, you value the community and track record, or you simply want the thing to install in one click today — which right now it will and ours will not.
Try JnK Linkweave if
You want to fix your internal linking before deciding whether to pay anyone, you would rather buy once than subscribe forever, you want to know why a suggestion appeared, or you run enough sites that $99 for unlimited against $497 for fifty is real money.
The thing that counts against us, said plainly. The JnK Linkweave free build is not currently installable from the WordPress plugin directory — our listing is closed while an account matter is resolved, and we do not control that timeline. The free version is a direct download from us in the meantime. That is a worse first experience than a one-click install and we would rather you heard it here than found out at the wrong moment.

JnK Linkweave takes the opposite approach: the free build has no site limit and includes the suggestion engine, unlimited auto-linking rules and both the orphan-page and broken-link reports.
Does Link Whisper use AI credits?
Each Link Whisper tier ships with a fixed AI credit allowance, and they sell separate AI Credit Plans for topping up on demand or by monthly subscription. Their own comparison table against LinkBoss describes their AI link suggestions as unlimited and built in, so the non-AI suggestions may well be unmetered. Both statements appear on their pricing page and it is worth checking against your own usage before you buy.
What is the best Link Whisper alternative?
It depends which part you want to replace. If the AI credit allowance is the issue, JnK Linkweave and Internal Link Juicer are both unmetered flat licences. If you want more scale than a plugin offers, LinkBoss is a cloud platform that inserts links in bulk. If you already pay for Rank Math PRO, AI Link Genius is included at no extra cost and you may not need a second plugin at all.
